Since we lived in Iowa for a time, I made sure they saw The Music Man and when it was announced as the production for the high school, they were thrilled. But some of the theater kids hadn't even heard of it and they had to ask Liesel what it was about. Of all the musicals they've don't she said Music Man was her favorite so far.
As Ireland put it, "It was my first musical at Central and it was pretty fire." While they had the rights to perform it, they didn't have the rights to advertise with the name Music Man lest it be confused with the production on Broadway so they they had to get really creative with the posters. "Follow the Wells Fargo Wagon over to CLC" for example. Mrs. Scherrer fondly called it The Melody Dude.
Marian the Librarian was Liesel's favorite because they got to dance on tables and with books. She had accidentally been kicked in the hand which broke a finger and for a hot minute she wasn't sure she could do it. If she used the metal splint she couldn't properly grasp the book the way she needed to so like every tough actor on Broadway she found a way to tape it so the show could go on.
Mrs Scherrer said she doesn't do this for the accolades, but it sure is nice to be noticed and they won Best Ensemble at the Illinois High School Musical Awards (IHSMTA). They were also nominated for Best Production and Best Actor in a Leading Role (Corey Atkinson as Professor Harold Hill). Corey was actually sick the week of the show and like Michael Jordan in the 1997 playoffs as he brought so much energy and gusto to his performance. Auren was fantastic as Mrs Shin- better than the movie in my humble opinion!
Because the show requires a kid's band, they paired with the elementary and middle schools so this was a massive production and they did so very well! One of my favorite quotes:
